Vogue India Cause Controversy! September 4, 2008

The latest issue of Vogue India features “real” Indian people carrying $10,000 Birkin bags or $200 Burberry umbrellas. Some are finding the photos “vulgar” and “distasteful,” but personally, I find it pretty refreshing when Vogue doesn’t use real models.

The shoot was a celebration of India and not a mockery of the”poor”. Perhaps, the people in the shoot come out as ‘poor’, because that is the persistant idea of India in the west.
This is not about poor people, its celebration of their spirit, which is very evident from the shoots…the ‘luxury’ products are mere props.
Like you said,a foreign model amidst these people carrying the Berkin perhaps wouldn’t have been so controversial as it seems, considering the plethora of such shoots in the past! Just forgoing a white model in the shoot is just no reason for controversy…
